Western Tapestry — Pike Place Market

The high, bare concrete wall running along Western Avenue at the Pike Place Market was long considered an eyesore. Western Tapestry creates a colorful transformation: 1,700 shimmering aluminum strips are suspended above the sidewalk in a serpentine fashion.

During public workshops, 200 people from the community added their designs to the aluminum strips. I derived the strips’ base colors from the cornucopia of fruits, vegetables, fish, and crafts found in the Market. Shifting LED colors illuminate the wall at night.
