Magdalena House, New Mexico

I carefully sited this custom-built home on its 19-plus acres to capture sweeping vistas of mountains and starry skies. A covered east-facing patio provides a shady gathering space, while a west deck affords beautiful views of New Mexico sunsets.

The walls of the 2,033-square-foot open plan passive solar home were constructed of Rastra insulated concrete blocks and rammed-earth. To mitigate the region’s summer heat, I installed a high metal roof over the house reminiscent of hay bale barns found locally.
