SIGN LANGUAGE – A collection of stories conveyed through color and pattern, a new LANGUAGE of pixilated arrangements and associations. SIGN ¬– everything is made from recycled traffic signs – warning signs, detour signs, and no parking signs. LANGUAGE – The original signs had a very specific language composed of letters, arrows and other symbols. They were meant to catch your attention and guide you in a very specific way. “Go this way.” “Be careful.” “You can’t park here.” By scrambling the original message, cutting the signs into small squares, I am inventing something entirely new. Sometimes this invention is literal as in the EYE self-portraits. Sometimes it is abstract as in the patterns and targets. The MASKS try to capture personality and character in the faces that appear out of the new arrangement of squares. In the ABC series, the original symbols and their messages disappear and then resurface as new letters and symbols, hoping to tell entirely new stories.
